Although they may appear to be free of danger, grain stores conceal many pitfalls. The subtle, volatile particles in the grain – mixed with the air in an enclosed environment – create a dangerously incendiary and explosive environment. It’s an issue that mainly affects farmers and livestock breeders, on which the fire brigade has planned various preventive activities. The places most at risk are silos, and large warehouses housing already ground grain. The risk increases even more if timber or timber by-products are stored, where self-combustion through fermentation could occur.
There are two main problems in such incidents: ineffective preventive measures and late intervention. ETG Risorse e Tecnologia wanted to offer its long experience in gas analysis.  We have designed a system that helps prevent fires in storage depots, solving traditional systems’ criticalities. Most preventive measures use temperature monitoring; when the temperature rises, an alarm is triggered. However, this approach only identifies a fire that has already developed.

A different philosophy
ETG SiloSafeGuard uses continuous monitoring of the gases that develop when combustion has not yet started. In fires, the development of flames – and temperature – is only the last chain of events. In the early stages, there is a progressive increase in some significant compounds such as Carbon Monoxide (CO), Carbon Dioxide (CO2), Nitrogen Oxide (NO), and Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2). Using sophisticated NDIR infrared technology, ETG SiloSafeGuard can monitor possible threats in real-time due to the unexpected increase in these gases. Unlike other detectors based on the same principle, ETG Risorse e Tecnologia does not use electrochemical sensors (prone to deterioration). The optical length of the installed infrared cell is more extended than standard detectors; this allows for more reliable, precise, and sensitive measurements. ETG SiloSafeGuard uses a complex multi-point sampling system, so no uncovered points and immediate detection are guaranteed.

Together with sophisticated technology, ETG Risorse e Tecnologia has provided the ETG SiloSafeGuard system with a simple and intuitive interface, thanks to the 5.7″ touchscreen operator panel. Several options are available to facilitate a rapid intervention in case of danger: alerts via e-mail and SMS, visual and audible alarms, and freely configurable relay outputs (to use it, for example, to activate a fire-fighting system). Besides, the interface can be accessed anytime and from anywhere in the world, even from mobile devices.
